1. comments from CA2: I do not yet reflect enough on the choices I made during design process. I am able to analyze the design process, but not yet able enough to show what it means for me as an image-maker, what conclusion I take from it.

2. actions/experiences/insights:
Especially during corona/quarantine and while looking for an internship I reflected a lot more on myself and who I am as an artist, but also on the work I made and want to make in the future. It can sometimes feel as if you are making the work for school or the teachers, as you are doing assignments for a grade. Now that I have a better understanding of what I’m actually interested in making I can focus more on making the work for myself and not stress to much about what the exact criteria are which would sometimes stop me from just starting and making mistakes. Then I really have to see the teacher as guides that can give me feedback on the way to improve my work.

As preparation for the internship, we got the assignment to write an artistic statement in which I put my work and personal artistic vision into words to clearly communicate it to others. Simultaneously I worked on a conversation piece, in which I already let go a bit more of thinking too much. I started from the idea of collecting things I really like, and I would want to make myself. I collected mostly ceramic and glass objects from my house and started photographing them. After I saw how without thinking too much the visual language, I used was very typical for a lot of my work so it used that for describing my artistic vision in my statement. For example, how I am always looking at colours and light and finding the right combination of them, and how I am intrigued by lines, shadows and the shapes they create. But mostly the objects themselves, which are both functional and aesthetically nice to look at, so you could see them as mini art sculptures.

For the project ‘publication’ (see more at creative ability) I had to write a letter to a publisher, in which I showed a very convincing link between my own work and the publisher I chose: IKEA. I researched IKEA’s values, and what makes their products so fitting for a large and diverse audience. I translated their concept of easily customizing and building your own closet to my design of interior decoration: a carpet. The carpet is both functional and fun to play with (I again tried to apply what I found out while writing my statement), and the audience can choose if they want it small or big so it can fit in any space.
